The Northern Virginia Knights got 7 great innings on the mound from Fryman against the Alexandria A's. Fryman gave up only 1 run on five hits while getting great support by the Knights who won, 15-1.  Redd led the Knights offense, a 3-5 effort with a double, two RBI and 2 runs scored. Warfield, Alvarez, and R. Carlson each added two hits for the Knights. Beasley started for the A's and kept it close through 6, even though he did not get a lot of support from his defense. The Knights finally broke it open with 9 runs in the 8th.  One bright spot for the A's was leadoff hitter J. Payne who went 3-for-3, scoring the only run on D. Joseph's RBI double in the 5th.

Tuesday, May 19, 2015

The Knights beat the Tenlytown Barbequers, 5-4, behind a stellar 5 innings by Snyder to close out the game. Snyder relieved Hernandez in the top of the 5th and allowed only two baserunners the rest of the game on a walk and a hit while collecting 8 Ks. The Knights offense was led by Redd and Warfield with two hits each and an RBI and a run scored, respectively. The BBQers starting pitcher threw a great game, recording 11 strikeouts.

The Knights swept a doubleheader Sunday morning to up their winning streak to 17 games. After a slow start, the Knights are in first place at 17-3.

Game 1 Sunday was won in dramatic fashion, beating the News Hounds 6-5 with a walk-off passed ball with two outs that allowed McDonald to score the deciding run. Snyder threw a complete game allowing only seven hits and two earned runs with seven strikeouts. The offense was led by Warfield, who went 3-4 with a double and two RBI, and Caggiano, who also went 3-4. J. McEvoy and Sherman also contributed with a hit and a run each.
Fryman also threw a complete game in the second leg of Sunday's doubleheader, allowing only one unearned run on five hits. Bonnet was the hero of the game, driving in two runs, including the game winner, on a double while facing a full count with two outs in the seventh. J. McEvoy went 2-4 with a double, and Caggiano went 2-3 with a walk and two runs. Hanley went 2-3 with a run scored, and Sherman had the game's first extra base hit and RBI, scoring Caggiano on a double in the fourth. The Knights played excellent team defense, with the team's lone error being the cause of the only run scored by the News Hounds.
Come out Thursday evening as the Knights take on divisional opponents, the Falls Church Barons. Game time is 7pm at Thomas Edison High School in Alexandria.

The Knights remain unbeaten this spring as they pull off a 3-2 balk-off victory in the 9th!

Great defense and exceptional pitching from both sides was the story for most of the night. The Knights struck first with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Hernandez in the 5th. The Senators came right back with back-to-back-to-back singles in the 6th to tie it up. The Senators would then pull ahead in the 8th off of their own sacrifice fly.

The Knights trailed 2-1 going into the bottom of the 9th. Leonard led the charge with a leadoff single. DiMatteo then layed down a beautiful sacrifice bunt to move Leonard into scoring position. Caggiano's third hit of the night was a big one. He hit a drive to deep center, scoring Leonard on a standup double. The game was tied with the Knights winning run in scoring position. Baker hit a hard single to left, but with the outfield playing in, Caggiano is forced to stop at third. With Spicer at the plate and the winning run 90 feet away, the ol' fake-to-third rule change strikes early and hard. Caggiano crosses the plate and the Knights win on a walk-off balk.

Snyder pitched 7 strong innings for the Knights, giving up 1 run and striking out 7. Hernandez pitched the final two to pick up the win.

(Sorry Royals fans, if there are any of you...)

Tonight's game against the Green Sox has been cancelled due to wet field conditions.

The Knights will face the Senators Thursday evening at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, MD. Game time at 8pm.

Friday, April 19, 2013

The Knights didn't waste any time getting the offense started this season. Hernandez led off the game with a walk. Orcutt's double into the right field corner put the Knights on the board early. The Senators struck early as well to tie the game at 1 after the first.

In the 2nd, with two on, Kunze hit a double into the gap in right-center field. Bess and DiMatteo both score to put the Knights up 3-1. Caggiano then led off the 3rd with a towering shot over the right field fence. The Knights would add 1 more in the 3rd to go up on the Senators, 5-1.

Pitching and defense would prevail over the next 5 innings. However, the Senators did not go quietly. Their bats awoke in the 9th with a leadoff double, followed by back-to-back singles. The Senators found themselves with the tying run on first base and two outs. A ball in the dirt put the runner in motion to get into scoring position, but Plouffe fired a strike down to second base to throwout the runner and end the game.

Knights win, 5-4. The win and game ball goes to Hernandez for his gem performance, going 7 1/3 while allowing just 1 run and striking out 10.

Sunday, November 04, 2012

The Knights struck early jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The offense continued in the third with a 2 RBI single by Baker and an RBI double by Warren. The Knights were up 6-0 through three.

That would turn out to be all the runs necessary as R Adams pitched an absolute gem for the Knights. Adams pitched the complete game allowing 7 scattered hits, 1 BB and only 2 unearned runs while striking out 5. His final three innings were just as efficient as his first three, allowing only 1 runner to reach base.

Game 2 is Monday night at Frank Mann Field in Alexandria.

Saturday, November 03, 2012

The Barons were unable to field a team for Saturday's semi-final match up. The Knights will move on to play the A's in DC Wood's Fall Championship. Game 1 of the best of 5 series starts Sunday morning at 10AM at Frank Mann Field in Alexandria.

Friday, November 02, 2012

The Barons drew first blood with a bases clearing double and a 4 run 4th inning. They didn't lighten up tacking on 2 more in the 5th.

The Knights responded with 5 runs of their own in the 6th. A walk in the 8th, followed by two Barons throwing errors allowed the tieing run to cross the plate. After 9 and at the time limit, the game remained tied 6-6.

Snyder pitched 5 strong innings for the Knights allowing only 2 ER and striking out 11. Mayer came in and allowed only 1 hit through the final 4 innings. The Knights offense was led by Bonnet with 3 1B and Sherman with 2 1B of his own.

Per the DC Wood playoff rules, game 2 will replay Saturday afternoon, 3PM at Frank Mann Field in Alexandria.

Saturday, October 27, 2012

DC Wood fall playoffs kicked off Saturday afternoon with the Knights(2) hosting the Barons(3) at Frank Mann Field in Alexandria. Early defensive miscues led to the Knights trailing 5-0 in the third inning. The Knights put 2 runs across in the bottom of the third off a 2-RBI single from Sherman.

Pitching and defense prevailed from here. Snyder pitched 5 strong innings in relief, not allowing a single baserunner and keeping the Knights in the game. The Knights had runners in scoring position at second and third in the 5th, 6th and 8th innings, but Barons pitching came up with huge K's to strand those runners in each instance.

The Knights were down to their last 3 outs trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the 9th. D Torres walks, followed by a Hernandez single. G Torres walks and the Knights have the tying run on base. Sherman hits a tough ground ball up the middle and the Barons are unable to record the out at second. Baker takes a hit-by-pitch and Bonnet comes to the plate with one out and the tying run on third. Bonnet hits a hard line drive off the glove of the second basemen and the Knights tie it up! With one out and the bases loaded, L Adams hits a sacrifice fly to center field to score Sherman from third. The Knights steal the victory, 6-5 and take a 1-0 lead in the semi-final series.

The Knights offense was led by Hernandez with 4 singles and Sherman with his 3-RBI's.

Game two tomorrow afternoon at 2PM at West Potomac HS.

Thursday, May 10, 2012

The Navigators took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and then expanded it to 5-1 through the early innings behind Fletcher, who looked strong.  The Knights' Baker got the start and went 3 innings before leaving in favor of Synder.  In the fifth, the Knights were able to fight back with a couple of runs to make it 5-3.  An inning later, three more gave them a 6-5 lead.  In the top of the eighth with 2 outs and 2 runners on for the Navigators, De Los Santos came on to pitch for the Knights and he induced a pop-up to shallow right, but the ball found the grass and the game was tied at 6-6 in the top of the eighth.  In the bottom of the inning Fletcher got two quick outs before he walked Bonnet.  An infield hit by Kleimann brought up Leonard with two on and two out.  Leonard smacked the ball to the first baseman who knocked it down but was unable to beat Leonard to the bag.  Bonnet, running with two outs and a full count, scored on the play and the Knights won 7-6 as time expired before the ninth could be played.

Thursday, May 03, 2012

The Knights prevailed in a close game with the Crystal City Restaurant Navigators, 5-3.  The Knights' Ralph Hernandez and the Navigators' Fletcher were superb from the mound and the game was  tied 1-1 for the first few innings.  In the fifth, the Knights got an infield hit, another, and then a 2 RBI double by Tommy McEvoy to take a 3-1 lead.  In the next inning, a 2 run homer by Dan Kunze got the Knights ahead, 5-1.  Ralph Hernandez held the Navigators to one run through 7 innings, and Ron Baker came on in the eighth and allowed nothing in that inning.  In the ninth the Navigators began a strong comeback, scoring two and getting another baserunner to bring the tying run to the plate.  It was not good enough as the Knights turned Navigator aggression back as the game ended on a 'caught stealing' at second.

Thursday, April 12, 2012

Humans and hounds, please join the Knights this Saturday morning for frolic, food, and a waggin' good time! The Knights take on the Vipers for a Saturday morning double header at South Run Park in Springfield, VA. Game times are 9:00 and 11:30AM.

Home is where the "bark" is!

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

The Knights open their 2012 summer season with a 5-4 win over the Senators Baseball Club. Snyder started on the hill by striking out the side in the first. His outing was cut a bit short by a 30 minute delay when the lights cut off in the fourth. T McEvoy pitched 3 strong innings in relief, striking out 4. Vlady closed out the seventh to pickup the save. The defese looked solid with R Adams & Leonard flipping two double plays up the middle.

Welcome to the Knights Kunze & Schaffer! Schaffer roped a double into the left field corner as part of our 4 hit, 4 run fourth inning. Kunze added 2 doubles of his own to earn himself the first 2012 Knights player of the game.

In a way to help give back to kids and players around the world, we are collecting any and all baseball equipment that anyone might have laying around and not using anymore. Such as old bats, gloves, balls, helmets, catcher equipment, batting gloves, basically anything you can spare that is in working order for other kids or adults to use. One of the Knights players has asked for some help in gathering gear to send home to some guys in the Dominican so that they can enjoy baseball just as we do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you have anything and can bring it to Tuesday's practice that would be awesome. If you can't make it Tuesday please contact us and we will arrange for a pickup.

Monday, August 01, 2011

The Knights finished up their regular season with an 11-13-1 record. The first round of the playoffs matched the (5)Knights up against the (4)Cardinals. The Knights took the first two games to sweep the Cardinals and move on to the second round. In the second round the Knights faced a very tough (1)Sneaky Weasels team. The Weasels took the series from the Knights and went on to the championship series against the (2)Alexandria A's, to create a repeat of last years championship series. In the championship, the Weasels took down the defending A's to win the DC Wood 2011 AAA Championship.

A great season all around. Final stats and team leaders for the summer 2011 season will be announced shortly.

Saturday, May 21, 2011

The Knights got the ladies on their feet early as J McEvoy opened up the game with a lead off homer. L Adams followed with a two run shot before the top of the first ended. Baker kept the Navigators offense in check as the Knights continued to bring in runs. The Navigators pitching struggled and the game quickly got out of hand. Ladies Knight ended early as the Knights won 17-3 in a game called after 5.

Wednesday, April 27, 2011

For his chosen profession, Snyder teaches young minds. But when not educating 4th graders on the finer points of sexual reproduction, he's on the hill for the Northern Virginia Knights sending opposing hitters to study hall and writing tardy slips with an 88 mph fastball.  Teammates have commented that when Snyder takes the mound, "It's like when a 22 year old Danny Almonte pitched against 12 year olds in the Little League World Series.  They're in for a pants crappingly long day filled with self-esteem destruction and fatherly beatings."  Such was the case Tuesday night as the Knights took down the DC Cardinals 2-0 in a pitching slugfest at Montgomery Blair High School.  Snyder struck out 4 and allowed only 3 hits through 6 shut out innings while fellow flamethrower McCoy wrung up 5 in the last three innings while surrendering only a lone single.

The Knights took the lead in the top of the first thanks to a lead-off E7 from the bat of Hernandez.  After being sacrificed to third, Hernandez crossed the plate on a passed ball strike out, which brought the inning strike out total to a seemingly unfathomable… four.  "It doesn't matter how you score," quoted legendary instructor Tom Emanski, "it only matters that she's legal."  Although the Alzheimer's riddled Emanski's point is well taken, the Knights and formidable Snyder/McCoy pitching duo wouldn't need any more run support and took control of the game with a "we got it from here, fellas" attitude that extended their winning streak to two.

The Cardinals did manage to make bat meet ball, but the Knights defense was stingy and gave an error free performance.  In the bottom of the 5th, the Cardinals had the lead-off hitter on first and their optimism for tying the game was on the rise.  However that optimism quickly turned flaccid like the end of a Peter North workday as R Adams corralled a tough ground ball with his backhand, flipped to Leonard at second and on to Caggiano at first for the double play.  The Knights outfield also got in on the stellar defensive action.  In the bottom of the 6th, left-fielder Hernandez made a sliding grab that made Caggiano's dog in attendance lick himself with joy for 3 ½ minutes.

Stay tuned for details on this weekends games.

Thursday, April 14, 2011

The Knights opened up the regular season with a win over The Senators Baseball Club, 6-0. The Knights jumped out to an early lead, scoring all 6 runs in the first three innings of play. That proved to be enough as McCoy, R Adams and Snyder kept the Senators offense quiet and combined for the shutout.

You always get a special kick on Opening Day, no matter how many you go through. You look forward to it like a birthday party when you're a kid. You think something wonderful is going to happen.

The Knights will host The Senators Baseball Club Thursday Knight, April 14 at 8PM at Shirley Povich Field in Maryland. The Knights are looking to build on their second place finish during the regular season in the Fall, their first season back in the DC Wood league.

Sunday, April 10, 2011

The Heritage Tournament playoffs kicked off this morning with the Northern Virginia Knights facing the Prince William Yankees. The Knights looked to Hernandez for another quality outing against an always tough Yankees lineup. Great pitching and tough defense kept this 7 inning contest scoreless through 5.

In the bottom of the 6th, the Yankees were able to string together a couple hits to take a 1-0 lead. With their backs up against the wall, the Knights' bats awoke in the 7th. Leonard lead off with a deep shot to center field for a standup triple. Caggiano then followed with a clutch RBI single to right. T McEvoy singled, followed by a walk to R Adams to load the bases. An infield error brought in the go ahead run for the Knights and the bases remained loaded. L Adams hit a sacrifice fly to center and the Knights took a 3-1 lead to the bottom of the 7th.

Hernandez continued work in the 7th by striking out the leadoff batter. But the Yankees refused to give up and loaded the bases with 1 out. The Knights brought in Snyder to try and silence the Yankees bats and pickup the save. Snyder struck out the first batter to bring the Knights 1 out away from the win. A broken bat single fell into shallow center field scoring 2 and tieing the game at 3. The next batter hit a hard ground ball just under L Adams' glove at third, and the Yankees win 4-3.

Great competitive play early on in the season. See complete batting and pitching stats from this years Heritage Tournament. The regular season it set to begin this weekend!

Tuesday, October 12, 2010

The Knights came out scoring a run in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead after three. Then in the fourth, the Knights defense slipped. Committing two errors alongside with three base hits, the A's would take the lead for good, 4-2.

The Knights are only a game back in the standings with five games remaining on the schedule. Come out and support the Knights this Saturday as they face off against the Carpool Green Sox at Frank Mann Field at 9AM.

Saturday, October 09, 2010

Snyder took the hill Friday night and gave the Knights another outstanding outing. Having allowed only one baserunner through five, he took a no hitter into the sixth inning. His no-hit bid was broken up in the sixth by the Barons' Rouf with a base hit to left. The Knights lead 4-0 after six.

The Barons' offense continued into the seventh with a leadoff triple by Mise. A fielding error and base hit by Nelson would bring the Barons within 2.

Snyder came out in the ninth looking for his second complete game in as many starts. The Barons wouldn't go quietly though, loading the bases with one out. Keeping his cool, Snyder picked up his 13th strikeout of the night and a fly ball to center to end the game.

The Knights win their 4th straight and start the weekend off in first place! A lot of baseball to go as the Alexandria A's face off against the DC Cardinals this afternoon. A game which should set the tone of tomorrow evenings matchup, and battle for first place, between the A's and Knights.

Friday, October 08, 2010

The Knights spotted the A's 3 in the first inning, but settled their defense down behind a great outing from Ryan Adams on the mound.

Luke Adams led off the third with a hit by pitch, followed by back-to-back singles from Brian Platt and Rafael Hernandez. Sean Plouffe walks with the bases loaded to put the Knights on the board, 3-1. Pete Caggiano stays red-hot this fall and ropes a 2 RBI double to the right-center field gap to tie the game at 3's.

Hernandez singles in the fifth, followed by a bunt base hit from Plouffe. A throwing error moves the runners around which leads to an intentional walk to Caggiano to load the bases. Mike Leonard comes through with a clutch sacrifice fly to give the Knights the lead, 4-3.

The A's found themselves in the sixth with the tying run in scoring position. And now, for the return of Serg! Sergio Rangel fielded a single up the middle, came up firing to hit Ben Bonnet with a one hopper to nail the runner at the plate and preserve the Knights 4-3 lead. Ryan Adams kept the A's hitters in check, and the Knights would continue to scatter in the run support.

Matt BoomBoom came through in the clutch with an RBI single in the sixth, and 2 RBI single in the eighth. More than enough for Hernandez to throw 3 innings of no-hit ball to pickup the save. Knights win, 7-3.

Monday, October 04, 2010

The Knights jumped out to an early 2 run lead in the first inning, and that would be all Calvin Snyder needed. He goes the complete game striking out 13! Multi-hit days from Justin Betof and Dave Kleimann helped the Knights top the Green Sox, 4-1.

Monday, September 20, 2010

The Knights jumped out to an early 8-2 lead Friday through four innings. Then, the Knights offense quieted and the Barons came alive. A big 6th inning gave the Barons the lead which they held onto for the win, 10-8. The Knights drop another close game, but it's good to see the offense coming around.

The Knights continued to hit the ball well on Sunday as they got another shot at the Barons. Some great offense alongside strong pitching from Ryan Adams and Rafael Hernandez led the Knights to their first victory this fall, 10-5!

I promise season stats are coming soon! But in the mean time, here are some weekend warriors:

  • Matt BoomBoom - 5-8, 3R, 2RBI
  • Rafael Hernandez - 5-10, 3R | Save, 4IP, 3K, 1H
  • Ryan Adams - 4-8, 2RBI | Win, 4IP, 3K, 4H
  • Calvin Snyder - 5IP,  9K, 4H

Great weekend of ball Knights!

Thursday, September 16, 2010

The Knights went up against the Cardinals again Wednesday night and were looking for some revenge after last Saturday's nail biter. Great pitching from both sides kept this one scoreless into the 4th. In the bottom of the 4th, the Knights sparked a two out rally with a single by Luke Adams, RBI triple by Justin Betof, and an RBI single by Ryan Adams. Knights lead 2-0. The Cardinals put one across in the 5th, and then a two-RBI double in the 7th gave them a 3-2 lead. Two more in the top of the 9th gave the Cardinals a little bit of insurance.

A couple walks and a couple errors in the 9th brought the Knights within two, with two runners in scoring position. But for the second time in as many games, the Cardinals hold on to a tight lead in a close game and grab the win, 5-3.

Great defense behind some excellent pitching kept the Knights in this one. The Knights have to be excited about their deep pitching staff this fall, but will need the offense to come alive soon. Let's bring the wood Knights!

Saturday, September 11, 2010

Courtesy of NABA - DC WOOD:

This time the DC Cardinals did not help a team win its opener, but it was close.  In the top of the ninth, Northern Virginia Knights were down by one, but had runners at second and third with only one out when their next hitter slammed a line drive right through the box.  Unfortunately for the Knights it found pitcher McCaleb's glove, and when he turned and threw to third where the runner had moved too far toward home, the Cardinals had an 8-7 win.  Beautiful weather, well played game, one run score.  It does not get much better.

Friday, August 06, 2010

The Knights cruised through the first two rounds of the playoffs thanks to clutch hitting and dominate pitching. Tuesday night was a bump in the road, as the Knights dropped the semi-finals matchup against the Potomac Hawks, 9-2. Saturday morning the Knights will get another shot at keeping the playoffs alive as they face the Manassas Crazy Horse at Hayfield High School at 10AM. Come out and support the Knights. A win will put them in the championship and a chance for revenge against the Hawks!

Follow the playoffs with the Blue & Gray League Playoff Tracker.

Thursday, June 24, 2010

After a 30 minute rain delay, the Knights took the field in Woodbridge to host the Fauquier Blues. The Blues came out early scoring 2 in the top of the first. But after that, Ron Baker and the Knights defense kept the Blues in check. Baker pitched 9 strong innings keeping the Blues off balance all night. The Knights brought the wood, putting up 14 hits, including doubles from Jake Bruton, Mike Leonard, and two from Ron Baker! A great night of baseball with the Knights picking up the win, 6-4. Let's see if the Knights can keep the momentum going into this weekends game against the divisional leaders, Fenlock Red Sox!

The season schedule has been updated with the latest from the Blue & Gray site. Game stats are also current as well. I know everyone wants season long stats, so I'm working on having those up soon as well.

Sunday, June 06, 2010

Interleague play began Saturday afternoon with the Knights going up against the Senators from Richmond, VA. With temperatures topping 90 degrees, the Knights took the field at G. Richard Pfitzner Stadium, home of the Potomac Nationals. After a sluggish start to the season, the Knights bats looked to have come alive on Saturday. Justin Betof, Jake Bruton, and Ron Baker all enjoyed multi-hit days. Ron Baker gave the Knights 5 quality innings on the hill in front of a solid defense. Called after 6 innings, the Knights pickup the win, 16-1. Next game is Friday evening against the Fedlock Red Sox at Wakefield HS.

Sunday, May 23, 2010

Blue & Gray Baseball Sun May 23rd ALL Morning games are PPD poor field conditions, Update to follow for afternoon games.

Sunday, May 16, 2010

The Knights and Giants went extra innings but neither could break a 3-3 tie.  Calvin Synder pitched a terrific game going all 10 innings.  Both teams played great defense and had some timely hits with all the scoring coming in the 7th inning.  The Knighs took a 3 run lead in the top of the inning with a 2 RBI triple by Pete Caggiano followed up by a another RBI knocking Pete in.  In the bottom of the inning the Giants got a few well placed hits and tied up the Knights 3-3.  After 1 extra inning the game ended in a tie.

Friday, May 14, 2010

The Knights and Red Sox got underway but ultimately the rain was too much and after a short rain delay the game was called in the top of the 1st inning.  To be re-scheduled.

Saturday, May 08, 2010

The stat engine is now up and running. The first couple games have box scores entered (Yankees @ Knights and Knights @ Indians) and the rest should be up over the weekend. The roster is still a work in progress, as it will currently only contain those players who have played in the first couple games. Look for a full roster to come over the weekend as well. Happy Mother's Day!

Thursday, April 22, 2010

The Western Kentucky and Florida Atlantic baseball teams make the most out of a lengthy rain delay. Sniper in the bleachers, sniper in the bleachers! Enjoy!

The Knights opened the season with a 20-5 loss against a tough team.  Behind a strong performance from Calvin Snyder who got his first start of the season, the Knights tried to hold down the Yankees bats but that only lasted for a few innings.  After a few errors and walks the Yankees jumped out to an early lead that only got worse as the game went on.  The Knights got the bats going in the late innings to get a few runs across the plate with some help from new comer Danny Clements who launched a 3 run homer for his first of the year.

The Knights finished up the 2010 Heritage tournament against Ermi's with a 5-1 loss.  It was a close game through 4 innings with Ermi's holding onto a 1-0 lead.  However Ermi's broke it open with some runs in the 5 inning on a few walks and a few doubles.  Overall the Knights played decent defense but struggled to get the bats going.   Rafael Hernandez got the start on the hill and went 4 strong innings.  The Knights had some strong games from Greg King and Mike Leonard to lead the way at the plate but didn't get much help.

The Knights opened up their 2010 season in the Heritage tournament against the Hawks with a 10-0 loss.  Costly errors and bats that were still asleep doesn't equal a good combination  Game two saw some of the same with Western Charles getting an early 7-0 lead.  The knights did have some good contributions from Calvin Synder who pitched a few strong innings, Greg King with a few hits and a couple of stolen bases and Rafael Hernandez provided some great defense at short stop as well.
